Digital game distribution is more than just a download

There has been a lot of talk again lately about how digital game distribution will overtake traditional retail distribution. In theory, it’s a no-brainer. For a company that does what we do, a world full of digital game distribution would be awesome, but we do understand why it hasn’t happened across the board. Digital game distribution makes perfect sense assuming the process offers value to game developers/publishers and to gamers, and so far, the value has yet to be fully understood and realized.

For the past few years, we’ve been listening to developers and publishers talk about the challenges they face when it comes to digital game distribution. Clearly, if it was just a matter of finding a faster way to deliver huge game files directly to gamers, everyone would already be doing it. For a gamer, downloading a game simply replaces the need to drive to a store, purchase the game, bring it home and open it. What it does not replace is the process of installing, updating, launching, etc., nor does it make that process any more convenient in most cases.

The allure of digital distribution is instant gratification – getting the game and playing it as quickly as possible. Imagine yourself as a child opening a gift – the greatest toy you could ever dream of – but not being able to play with it for hours. It’s pure torture! In other words, condensing all those steps into a seamless, simplified process that lets gamers spend more of their time playing (or creating characters, running through tutorials, etc.) rather than having to wait hours just to start doing those things. Why not make it all as seamless and hassle-free as possible?

Indeed, why not?

So we did. Soon we will be officially announcing our game publishing software suite which has been designed to help developers and publishers deliver a seamless download, install, update, and launch process directly to their gamers. On top of all that, the software will also enable new ways to promote and monetize, giving developers and publishers another (digital) means of distribution that enables them to keep the majority of their earnings AND to promote other titles all through the same interface.
