NOTE: This is the second in a series of posts on P2P technology and game publishing. See the first post, User Engagement: A Simple and Intuitive P2P Participation Policy and our main P2P Best Practices page. Please subscribe to our news feed or check back soon for more. – Ed

As an early developer of commercial P2P solutions for games, Solid State Networks has often had to work to educate customers, partners and regulators about how the technology actually works, how it can/should be implemented, etc. Still, “P2P technology” is commonly confused with the attributes of its implementation which can, in turn, result in unintended consequences. This happened in 2009 when the U.S. House of Representatives introduced HR 1319, a bill also known as the “Informed P2P User Act”.

This bill, as originally introduced, would have required all P2P applications to comply with a restrictive set of rules for the stated purpose of preventing the inadvertent sharing of personally identifiable information (PII) by any user of any P2P network. At the time, we thought a more appropriate name for this bill would have been The Uninformed P2P User Act.

Fortunately, through the tireless efforts of the Distributed Computing Industry Association (DCIA), led by its CEO Marty Lafferty, along with input from key DCIA members including Solid State Networks, subsequent drafts of the bill included language that excludes certain P2P implementations that are clearly not capable of sharing PII. These applications, such as those used for content delivery, serve a very different function than the file-sharing applications that have motivated the bill’s sponsors to pursue this legislation. As a result of the efforts from the DCIA and Congressional and FTC staff, commercial P2P delivery solutions will not be unduly impacted by H.R. 1319 should the bill (which has since passed in the House) become law.

HR 1319 was indeed a close call and should be something of a wake-up call for both P2P vendors and the game publishers that benefit from P2P technology. Game publishers, whether you are using a commercial P2P solution or rolling your own P2P implementation, should be on the lookout for things that might impact your ability to utilize P2P technology in the future. There are still many open questions with respect to the use of P2P technology for game delivery (or any type of content files) to and among consumers that need to be understood for P2P to mature as a widely adopted consumer technology, such as:

Who owns the resources that power a P2P network? Who has the right to use these resources?

How can a player’s resources be controlled and used? How should they be used?

How are decisions made concerning the use of these resources? Who should make those decisions?

What role should players have in how their resources are utilized?

What are all of the benefits of P2P? How are those benefits distributed among publishers, P2P vendors and players?

What are the costs of P2P? How are those costs distributed among publishers, P2P vendors and players?

What are the requirements for disclosure? Are the minimum legal requirements enough?

What risks and potential liabilities are associated with implementing P2P for game delivery? How can those risks be mitigated?

Today, Solid State Networks is publishing the first edition of The Game Publisher’s Guide to P2P Delivery. This guide is designed to help you understand P2P technologies and their various implementations so that you can formulate your own answers to these questions. We will be updating this document as necessary to reflect changes in the technology and in the games industry. To get the document, use this simple request form and we’ll email you a link to it.

[contact-form]

In conjunction with the release of the Publisher’s Guide, we are also publishing our own Best Practices for P2P Delivery with Online Games. These Best Practices represent our belief in the core values of transparency, control and privacy—directives which should be adopted by publishers who value long-term relationships with players.

The Best Practices also follow the concept of User Engagement: A Simple and Intuitive Peer Participation Policy.

Yes, we develop software for P2P game delivery, but we are gamers, too. We hope that our efforts to inform and educate the game community will result in a constructive industry discussion that ultimately promotes the continued adoption of P2P technologies by game publishers, trust of the technology among gamers and the avoidance of impediments often caused by legislated regulation.

We welcome any and all input from publishers, gamers, developers and other commercial P2P solution providers. If you have a comment or question please let us know using the comments section below:

Level 3 and Solid State Networks’ Combined Solution Provides Advanced Reporting and Analytics for Pure-Play Online Games Company

BROOMFIELD, Colo., June 1, 2010 – Level 3 Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: LVLT) today announced its work with Austin, Tx.-based UTV True Games (www.truegames.com), an international pure-play online game publisher for massive multi-player online games (MMOGs), to provide content delivery network (CDN) services and advanced reporting analytics to support UTV True Games’ MMOG game titles.

Under the terms of the agreement, UTV True Games will leverage both Level 3’s CDN services and game publishing software from Solid State Networks, a Level 3 Solutions Partner. Solid State Networks will provide its integrated game publishing solution alongside Level 3’s caching and download services, origin storage, and Content Analytics reporting service.

“We’ve been impressed by both the quality of the service as well as the level of responsiveness and collaboration we’ve experienced with Level 3 and Solid State Networks,” said Mick Giles, chief technology officer for UTV True Games. “With the insight the companies have provided, we’ve significantly improved our download process over the past year to our players’ benefit.”

Level 3 and Solid State Networks offer game delivery solutions for developers and publishers designed to increase player conversion and retention, improve operational efficiency, and provide actionable reporting metrics.

Level 3 and Solid State Networks have been working with UTV True Games to support the company’s Warrior Epic MMOG title (www.WarriorEpic.com) and the upcoming launch of the Mytheon game (www.MytheonGame.com), currently in beta. By examining the extensive metrics provided by both companies, UTV True Games was able to identify areas for improvement in its download experience and make adjustments to its process, thereby increasing the number of successful game downloads.

“This is a great example of the benefit of the solutions Level 3 and Solid State Networks provide to meet the specific needs of live game operators,” said Peter Neill, senior vice president of Content Markets at Level 3.”UTV True Games has access to a high level of actionable reporting metrics and – just as importantly – the support of a team that understands online game publishers’ requirements and can help implement new and better solutions for their business.”

Combined Level 3 CDN and Solid State Networks’ Game Publishing Software, Offers Faster Downloads and Improved Analytics

BROOMFIELD, Colo., March 08, 2010 – Level 3 Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: LVLT) today announced that it has teamed up with Solid State Networks, a leading provider of game publishing software, to offer an integrated game delivery solution for game developers and publishers designed to increase player conversion and retention, improve operational efficiency, and provide actionable reporting metrics.

Solid State Networks’ game publishing software enables a smooth game acquisition and update experience, fostering higher conversion and retention rates. Player engagement opportunities allow for monetization during game downloads and updates, and each time a game is launched. The integrated solution will leverage those capabilities along with Level 3′s extensive IP transit network and sophisticated content delivery network (CDN).

“Our online game customers demand the best possible ingress experience for their players along with an efficient updating and patching process in a solution that can be tailored to meet the specific requirements of their games. In combining these capabilities with Level 3′s network, we have an end-to-end solution that improves the overall user experience,” said Rick Buonincontri, CEO of Solid State Networks. “With this improved experience also comes richer data, as our customers now have access to both our reporting and the Level 3 analytics platform.”

Level 3′s suite of CDN services for the gaming market includes caching and download services, storage services, live streaming of events including game launches and competitions, as well as advanced reporting capabilities and real-time traffic statistics that provide visibility and insight. Content originated on the Level 3 network passes through fewer networks (hops) en route to Internet destinations, which helps enable more consistent performance, less downtime and less disruption to the gaming experience.

“Level 3′s collaboration with Solid State Networks provides a powerful solution for game publishers to improve the user experience while providing real-time usage statistics that help game publishers to better understand traffic patterns and to make adjustments for their business and their customers,” said Peter Neill, senior vice president of Content Markets at Level 3. “Our network and Content Analytics platform are well-suited for the game industry, and we’re looking forward to expanding our collaborations and presence in this space in the coming year.”

Level 3 and Solid State Networks are working together as part of Level 3′s recently launched Content Delivery Partner Program (CDP). The program allows business partners to leverage the Level 3 CDN and Vyvx broadcast platforms to enable an outstanding experience for online and broadcast end-users.

DCIA Invites Participation in P2P-for-Games Working Group
New Initiative Aims to Protect Consumers and Intellectual Property of Distribution Channel Participants

Washington, DC – The Distributed Computing Industry Association (www.DCIA.info), a trade organization representing peer-to-peer (P2P) and related software providers, content rights holders, Internet service providers (ISPs), and service-and-support companies, today announced a call for participation in the newly formed P2P-for-Games Working Group (PFGWG) and for speakers at the inaugural P2P & GAMES CONFERENCE.

Qualified interested parties are invited to e-mail PFGWG@dcia.info or call +1-410-476-7965 to sign-up or for more information.

“The purpose of this working group is to help leading P2P software distributors and online games publishers develop best practices that will optimize commercial distribution of digital games and updates to personal computers (PCs), game consoles, and mobile devices by means of P2P applications and P2P-enabled software,” said DCIA CEO Marty Lafferty in making the announcement.

Co-Chairs for the PFGWG are Rick Buonincontri, CEO of Solid State Networks (www.solidstatenetworks.com) and Rich Roberts, Vice President of Sales and Business Development at PlayFirst (www.playfirst.com) representing the interests of P2P software developers and distributors and games publishers and marketers, respectively.

“Instilling the greatest degree of consumer confidence in, adoption of, and satisfaction with P2P technologies used for the distribution of digital games and updates is a key priority for this working group, and we intend to accomplish this by offering consumers optimal transparency, control, and value when using P2P technologies for the distribution of games,” said PFGWG Co-Chair Rick Buonincontri.

“Providing industry participants with practices and procedures that will ensure the protection of intellectual property (IP) of such content offerings is also a key priority for our work, and we intend to provide relevant vendors and Internet service providers (ISPs) with recommendations for how they, too, can participate in the commercial enhancement of IP protection for digital games and updates distributed by means of P2P technologies,” added PFGWG Co-Chair Rich Roberts.

Charter members of the PFGWG include Abacast (www.abacast.com), Activision Blizzard (www.activisionblizzard.com), PlayFirst (www.playfirst.com), Real Networks (www.real.com), Solid State Networks (www.solidstatenetworks.com), Turbine (www.turbine.com), Velocix (www.velocix.com), and Yummy Interactive (www.yummyinteractive.com).

Membership in the PFGWG is organized in two groups: P2P software developers and distributors; and games publishers and marketers.

Qualifications for participation in the PFGWG are that the primary business of prospective participants be one of the above two categories. For such PFGWG participants, there is no cost to participate in the PFGWG and no pre-requisite for acceptance into the PFGWG.

The PFGWG is open to all P2P software developers and distributors and online games publishers and marketers on a global basis, subject only to the approval of PFGWG leadership. In addition, DCIA Member companies in good standing are entitled as a privilege of Membership to participate in the PFGWG.

A membership class of observers may be created for vendors, Internet service providers (ISPs), and support entities that are interested in the PFGWG but are not otherwise qualified to actively participate.

The PFGWG will also seek to enlist public and IP interest groups specializing in games as co-sponsors. In addition, appropriate US federal regulatory authorities have been invited to participate in and monitor PFGWG activities.

The first-ever day-long P2P & GAMES CONFERENCE will take place in Santa Monica, CA on Thursday October 22nd in conjunction with Digital Hollywood Fall.

The conference will focus on consumer issues, business models, revenue generation, market trials, content protection, and case studies that demonstrate the benefits of P2P and cloud computing for the distribution of games and updates to networked devices from PCs to consoles to mobile-phones. Digital Hollywood Fall is the premier entertainment and technology conference in the country.

To extend the reach of the P2P & GAMES CONFERENCE to those unable to personally attend the event, which is being held in the Catalina Room of Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel, a live interactive webcast of the event will also be provided, which will be viewable on-demand after the conference as well.

Prospective speakers are welcome to call +1-410-476-7965 or e-mail at PGC@dcia.info.

SOLID PUBLISHER Enables Download, Installation, Update, Launch and Promotion Capabilities

TEMPE, Ariz. – June 16, 2009 – Solid State Networks, Inc., the leading developer of digital game and patch delivery solutions, today announced the availability of SOLID PUBLISHER, the company’s game publishing software suite. SOLID PUBLISHER includes two distinct products that enable game developers and publishers to deliver games directly to gamers through a single interface. The first product, SOLID PUBLISHER: CURRENT, was developed to minimize game delivery and setup time for gamers by offering a single, seamless interface through which gamers can download, install, update, and launch a game. The second product, SOLID PUBLISHER: DIRECT, enables a variety of interactive and promotional capabilities that help developers and publishers to brand, promote, and monetize games in new and more profitable ways.

“SOLID PUBLISHER evolved from our original game update software known as CURRENT. By offering a complete game publishing package, we are able to offer substantially more value to developers and publishers, but, more importantly, they are able to offer greater value to their gamers,” said Skylar Kreisher, Solid State’s Vice President of Game Services. “The value for game makers is a direct and more profitable way to distribute titles to their audiences. The value for gamers is that they get an easy way to get the games and get into playing them much faster than ever before.”

Evolved from previous versions of the company’s patching solutions, SOLID PUBLISHER is a complete game publishing software suite designed specifically for game developers and publishers to implement quickly while using minimal developer resources. The software also utilizes Solid State’s proven, reliable delivery technology, which has delivered games to millions of players since 2006. The advanced feature set includes “patch while you play” capabilities, optimizations for speeding download and installation times and a hybrid HTTP/P2P delivery option.
