Product Evolution: The Solid Axis™ Suite
Solid State Networks was founded specifically to create a new breed of enterprise level content delivery software. Our initial development efforts focused on incorporating a peer-to-peer architecture within a traditional CDN framework in a way that would be beneficial to commercial content publishers. To start, we developed our own proprietary implementation of the BitTorrent™ Protocol, arguably the most efficient peer-to-peer (P2P) protocol that has proven to be massively scalable. We proceeded to address the shortcomings within the protocol itself that we perceived would limit widespread commercial adoption: no concept of reliable delivery, the inability to set a quality of service, a daunting user experience for the uninitiated, and the lack of accurate and detailed reporting.
Solid State Networks was the first company to introduce a hybrid delivery solution to the market whereby each and every user is guaranteed delivery through the combination of HTTP and P2P protocols. This required the development of several key components: our proprietary Tracker server, which coordinates the communication among recipients of content objects; Client software to manage both the HTTP and P2P delivery; and Network Seed servers, which ensure high availability of content on the P2P network.
As these tools evolved, so did the need for robust reporting and analytics. Consequently, we developed an Administrative and Analytics module and modified our Tracker, Client and Seed components to provide rich data that could be reported and analyzed.
Eventually we bundled these products with our other support tools to become the first generation of the Solid State Distributed Delivery Network (or DDN). The DDN underwent extensive testing and has been successfully deployed to deliver rich media such as games and videos to millions of users.
